  • At times we worry that we're putting out too many fruitbombs at the expense of excellent, more balanced offerings. Hopefully this Rwandan microlot rectifies that. We're getting chocolate banana bread on the nose. That's what jumps out of the bag, and the cup backs it up. Cranberry and orange up front, then banana, chocolate, and almond underneath. Grapefruit and nectarine keep it lively, the body is creamy and a little chewy, and it finishes with more banana, vanilla, and a touch of marzipan. A sweet, balanced Rwanda that's very easy to drink. We're putting this one in Daily Driver, a rarity for an African!

Mwasa is one of the few washing stations in Rwanda that is truly cooperative-owned. Ten farmers founded it in 2006, and together they tend close to 100,000 Bourbon trees that supply the station. They paid off their start-up loan by 2010 and have run the station on their own ever since. Their farming practices have become a model for neighboring producers. The cherry is pulped, wet-fermented, and dried on raised beds at 1,636 meters.
